You are about to visit the Banco Chinchorro Biosphere Reserve. This protected area has a great diversity and richness of native flora and fauna that can be threatened by external elements and the effect of visits to the reserve. That is why, as visitors to the Reserve, we must respect SPECIAL BIOSECURITY MEASURES to reduce the risk of introducing invasive species into the reserve and thus protect the biodiversity of the Reserve:

  • BAGS AND BACKPACKS: It is not allowed to carry backpacks, cloth or leather bags or any other container that cannot be wet and disinfected. Dry bags or any other container that can be wet and disinfected are allowed, and they will be disinfected, in order to avoid the introduction of insects, other animals or seeds on the island. Customers who must leave their bags before departing, will be provided with containers to store their personal items during the trip.

  • SUNBLOCKS AND CREAMS: The use of any type of sunblock or cream that is not biodegradable is not allowed. It is recommended to cover head and arms to avoid sun damage and apply the protector (only if it is biodegradable) at least half an hour before entering the water.

  • EQUIPMENT: Snorkeling and diving equipment must be properly disinfected with ammonium quaternary to eliminate bacteria and microorganisms that may affect coral bleaching (White Syndrome), as well as any organic remains that may affect the balance of the ecosystem. Pepe Dive Mahahual equipment is disinfected daily with this product.
Customers who bring their own equipment will be asked to take it out of their bags for disinfection and a special transport bag will be provided.

  • FOOTWEAR: It is not allowed to wear shoes with rough or mountain soles. Only beach flip flops and shoes are allowed and they will be checked and disinfected before accessing the boat to avoid the transfer of seeds and microorganisms.

  • FOOD: In case that visitors bring any kind of food, they must notify the crew before leaving. This may be reviewed to avoid the introduction of seeds that may alter the biodiversity of the reserve.

  • GARBAGE: It is not allowed to throw any type of garbage on the island. All the remains produced by the visitors must go back on the boat with the visitors. On the ship there are designated containers for each type of garbage and the crew will show them to you when you are in the boat.

We appreciate your understanding and collaboration in the implementation of these measures. Our crew is at your disposal to answer your questions.
